- Coatlus' design is based on the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, for whom it is named.
- Coatlus was the largest pterosaur in the original Fossil Fighters. However, this position has now been put into question with the introduction of Hopter into Fossil Fighters: Champions and onwards. It is believed that Hatzegopteryx, the genus for Hopter, could grow slightly larger than Quetzalcoatlus, the genus for Coatlus.
